Adults refer to animals or humans who have completed their growth and development. Within the human realm, adult is a reference to legal and social concepts. A legal adult, in contrast to "minors" (also known as non-adults) are those who are of the majority age and therefore considered independent, responsible and self-sufficient. The term "major" is a term applied to the person. The age at which a child becomes an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of maturity is different based upon the nation or legal system in place, and also their psychological state.

Adulthood refers to the time in the lifespan of a human being during where physical and mental maturity have been attained. Most people think that adulthood starts at 20 years or more. The middle age is about 40 years old before being followed by an elderly age of 60. The three main stages of adulthood include early adulthood (from the mid 30s until late 60s) mid-adulthood between mid-30s until late-60s and then later adulthood (mid-60s through death). The physical maturation process is complete when we enter the early years of adulthood (20-40s) but height and weight might increase slightly. In young adulthood the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their best which includes the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed, sensory abilities, and cardiac functioning.
